PC Tune-Up is the registry optimizer from Large Software. The program includes simple guides that ensure novice users can operate the software, but there's also an expert mode so advanced users can access the tools they need quickly. It has safety features for protecting your system's data, and the scan and repair tools were quite effective and helped to improve the performance of our test computer.
This registry optimizer includes two registry scanning options – a smart scan and a quick scan. The smart scan is recommended by the software, and it will go deep into the registry and system files seeking out errors. The quick scan is designed to scan for common errors that occur in the system's registry. In our testing, the smart scan tool took 882 seconds and found 420 registry issues. This was the longest scan time among the registry repair software we tested.
PC Tune-Up includes a registry defrag tool with a summary screen that provides both a before and after view of the registry. After we ran the software's optimization and repair tools, PC Tune-Up had increased the performance of our test computer by 3.06%, which was the third-highest aggregate performance increase among all the registry software brands we reviewed.
PC Tune-Up offers registry backup options. The program automatically creates a restore point when you make a change to your registry, and it lets you manually save a backup to your hard drive. This is good because there is a chance that during registry cleaning you could inadvertently damage your system, and the restore point lets you revert to a previous configuration when Windows won’t restart correctly. The separate saved backup helps you undo changes without having to restart your computer, which includes undoing individual changes. This saves you time, as you don't need to perform an entire registry restore.
Like other registry optimizer programs, PC Tune-Up will scan for specific registry errors. It scans for invalid DLLs, invalid help files, COM and ActiveX objects, sound and app events, invalid class keys, application paths, invalid fonts and shared folders. It also fixes and removes corrupt files. That is nine of the 15 scan criteria we were looking for in registry repair software.
The software does not check for invalid CLSID & Typelib and interface entries, nor does it scan your registry for spyware, delete empty registry keys, remove duplicate items, check shell extension or check for hidden traces of installed software. In several ways this means it will overlook malware that’s made its way to your registry, so it is advised you also look into getting quality antivirus software.
Large Software offers telephone support for PC Tune-Up, which is something to look for in better registry scanners. Large Software also has a FAQs page on its website, which is very good for helping you to find quick answers to common problems users have with the software. Large Software does not have live chat, but you can get email support through a form submission page on the website.
