Reg Organizer Reviewer's Comments

Reg Organizer from ChemTable is a good product for registry scanning and editing, but has some issues with ease of use and safety. Its interface could use a pretty major facelift and the addition to severity rankings on scanning results would be a great addition. An update to the local help files would be a great addition to this program as well.

Ease of Use:  

The interface can be easy to use once you figure out where everything is and what it all means. There is a navigation bar located on the left side of the screen allowing you to switch between functions. While this is a standard feature, many of the screens that you are presented with are difficult to use. They don't give you any clear path to use while using the program. This is a limitation of Reg Organizer and should be fixed and simplified as soon as possible.

Feature Set:  

Reg Organizer allows you to view, edit, and clean the registry. One feature offered by Reg Organizer is its instant access to programs which are automatically started when you logon to your computer. This shows what is running on your machine and allows you to delete or disable items you want removed from your startup. With most programs, when you manually delete something from windows, the uninstall options are removed as well, leaving references to these programs in your add/remove list. However, Reg Organizer has the ability to uninstall programs found in the Windows add/remove list. There is an excellent backup system allowing you to backup any deleted material. This enables you to restore changes you have made to the material. Another excellent feature is the age system which indicates which added items are "new". This helps you keep track of new programs and records that appear in your system registry.

The installation of Reg Organizer was easy.

Help/Support:  

Reg Organizer offers a local help option and email support directly through the program. The local help is light on some subjects, but can be mildly useful at times.

Safety:  

Reg Organizer performs a thorough scan of your registry. It gives a general description of the error and where it occurs. You may do either a general or a specific scan on areas such as Shared DLLs and Shell Extensions. This program lacks the ability to rate the severity of each error. Therefore, it is difficult to make an informed choice of which errors to fix and which should be deleted. The backup system, however, allows you to undo a registry fix individually or all at once.

Summary:  

Overall Reg Organizer is an excellent program for editing and cleaning your registry if you are an advanced user. Novice users will appreciate the simple one-click scan displaying all potential problems within the registry, but could be overwhelmed by the large number of options that they are presented with as soon as they try to do anything within the program.
